As Winter on the coast begins, the annual humpback whale migration returns. The mighty movement from South to North heralds the imminent arrival of a new herd of calves, born in the shallow warm waters of the Queensland coast.  While there are a myriad of vantage points to view these wonderful marine creatures at play this Winter, we thought we would give you our 3 picks for 2021 – The best spots to grab a glimpse of these giants!

BONVILLE HEADLAND (Southies) SAWTELL

For the perfect Sunday morning outing, dig out your Winter scarf and grab a thermos and some camping chairs. Jump in the car and make your way to beautiful Bonville Headland in SAWTELL. This open headland is the perfect place to see a tonne of Whales this year. With vistas all the way South to Scotts Head. It’s an incredible place to catch the sunrise. Just a stones throw from the main street of Sawtell, make sure you pack an appetite and grab a table at Cafe TREEO for breakfast – go for Eggs Benny…

WOOLGOOLGA HEADLAND

Welcome to the East Coast whale highway – Woolgoolga main headland is set way out into this north facing bay meaning your view is approx 270 degrees of ocean.  The whales have been known to enter the inside of the bay so if you’re lucky, you might even find yourself looking straight down onto one of these magnificent mammals! Looking for some lunch, you’re in good company. Head to the incredible box factory burgers, just off the main drag for a burger you won’t forget quickly! Y.U.M

YOUR SECRET SPOT – DIGGERS HEAD at Charlesworth Bay

This one is a double whammy, an incredible little hike and a spot that only the locals really know about. Turn off the Pacific Hwy and make your way down to Charlesworth Bay Beach, just moments from the hustle and bustle of Coffs Harbour. Park the car and take the Diggers Head Trail southward, up onto the headland. Stay left as the trails splits and head directly eastward toward the end of the headland. Incredible views await those willing to put in the hard work! Watch the sun go down over the Coffs Coast hinterland as you watch the whales go by. Be sure to stop in for a Cocktail at Pacific Bay Resort with Happy Hour from 5pm, 7 days a week!
